About Kali Linux

Kali Linux 2026.2 is a release of the open-source, Debian-based Linux distribution from OffSec, built for penetration testing, security research and digital forensics. You can download official images from kali.org or run it on Windows through the Microsoft Store; below we look at who it is really for.

What Kali Linux is

Kali Linux first appeared on 13 March 2013 and has since become the standard toolbox of the information security world. It is a complete operating system that ships with a large set of pre-configured tools for tasks such as penetration testing, security research, computer forensics, reverse engineering, vulnerability management and red team testing. Being based on Debian, it behaves like a familiar Linux system, with the same package manager and repositories, but its defaults are tuned for security work rather than for everyday desktop use. It runs on x86, x86-64 and ARM hardware, in virtual machines, from a USB stick, in the cloud and on Windows through WSL. New releases arrive several times a year; 2026.2 came out on 29 June 2026, so check the official download page for the newest image.

Who it is for

  • Security professionals who run penetration tests and audits for clients.
  • Students and trainees preparing for security courses and certifications.
  • System administrators who want to test their own networks for weaknesses.
  • CTF players and researchers practising offensive and defensive techniques.

Who should pick something else

If you are looking for a Linux system for browsing, office work or gaming, Kali is the wrong choice: it is a specialist tool, not a friendly daily desktop. Beginners in Linux are better served by a general-purpose distribution first.

How to get it on Windows

  1. For WSL on Windows 10 and higher, install Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store after enabling the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  2. For a virtual machine or a USB installation, download an image from the official download page.
  3. Verify the checksum of the image before you use it.
  4. Update the system after the first start so tools and security patches are current.

Size

The installer image is about 4.40 GB according to catalogue data. Leave room for updates and extra tools in the virtual disk or partition.

Safety and legal notes

Download Kali only from kali.org or the Microsoft Store; tampered images of security distributions are a real risk. Use its tools only on systems you own or have written permission to test. Running scans against other people's networks without permission is illegal in many countries.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: free, open source and actively maintained.
  • Pro: security tools ready out of the box.
  • Pro: runs on many platforms, including WSL.
  • Con: not suited to everyday desktop use.
  • Con: large download.

Alternatives

The other operating systems in our listings are general-purpose Windows releases, such as Windows 10, aimed at everyday use rather than security testing. More answers are in the official Kali Linux FAQ, and changes are tracked in the change log.
